Assessing Changes to our Online Release Strategy

This graph will be interesting to those who read our recent blog post New Coin Releases Come Early For Collectors In 2012.

In it we announced the online availability of our latest coins at just after midnight on Tuesday 3 January 2012.
As explained in that post, traditionally we announce details of new products around 9.00am Perth time on launch day. Recently, this has resulted in a stampede of online and telephone orders from within Australia, putting pressure on internal sales and administration systems.
The graph reveals the impact of the change of schedule. Even though January was not such a big month as November, it achieved a positive outcome.
The red line portrays the sharp rise in transactions in the first few hours of our November 2011 product launch.
In contrast, the blue line shows a more gently build up of transactions in January 2012, thanks to the earlier release hour.
As a consequence, our systems handled demand more effectively, resulting in improved levels of client satisfaction (although we did experience short-term difficulties with the availability of one product because of unrelated technical problems).
The result ensures that we will continue with this new practice. While it is encouraging, however, it is not the final solution to the underlying issues. Consequently, we remain fully committed to the complete review of our website, telephone, back-end systems and other support infrastructure.
This redevelopment is now in progress, but as I stated in the last post, the full extent of these changes will take time to implement fully.

Hopman Cup Medallions a Smash Hit

The Perth Mint was delighted to be invited to strike 2oz commemorative silver medallions for each player at this week’s Hopman Cup in Perth, including Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova (right) and world number 46, Tsvetana Pironkova.

We also made the 1/2oz silver medallions tossed prior to every match on Centre Court. Delighted spectators who won the right to ‘toss the coin’ and meet the players also kept the specially minted medallions.

Olympic Coin Aims to Explain Soccer's Offside Rule

Since the age of six, my son has played soccer. I’ve attended dozens of Sunday morning matches as a cheering parent – but also as a linesman and occasional ref. Great fun – especially when he scores a goal. But nothing causes as much angst to a volunteer official as the offside rule. Woe betide you if you get this law wrong!
Explaining the offside rule to football beginners (and their parents) can be difficult and frustrating. So I was cheered to read this morning that this topic is as much an issue in Britain (where the modern-day game was invented) as it is in Australia.
Now there’s a 50 pence coin which attempts to explain football’s offside rule to the many who do not understand it. Designer Neil Wolfson, a sports journalist and football fanatic, says he hopes people can use the coin when they are trying to clarify the complicated law.
“If I had 50p for every time someone had asked me to explain the offside rule I’d be a very rich man!” he says.
An ingenious diagram on the coin’s reverse outlines a football pitch with simple icons showing whether a player is offside or not.
The coin is part of a new Royal Mint set celebrating the London 2012 Olympics. I really should get one for the next time my boy runs on to the soccer pitch.

Kapyong Courage Remembered

The Korean War began in June 1950 when North Korean forces launched an invasion of South Korea. The United Nations multinational force defended South Korea from the Communist forces, which included the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army. The Australians were part of a force that was defending the Kapyong Valley, north of Seoul, during April 1951.
Kapyong came to be the most significant and important battle for Australian troops in Korea. In April 1951, the Chinese launched their spring offensive with the aim of retaking the city of Seoul. They quickly overran South Korean troops defending one of the major approach routes to Seoul – the valley of the Kapyong River.
During a night of fierce fighting and throughout the daylight hours of 24 April, the Australians and a Canadian battalion, supported by a New Zealand artillery regiment, stalled the Chinese advance before eventually withdrawing after dark. The Australians had helped hold off the Chinese 60th Division and prevented Seoul from falling into enemy hands.

For its “extraordinary heroism and outstanding performance of combat duties in action against the armed enemy” 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR) was awarded the United States Presidential Citation.
The end of the Korean War came with the signing of an armistice on 27 July 1953. After the war ended, the presence of Australians in Korea continued with a peacekeeping force until 1957.
Released yesterday, The Perth Mint’s Famous Battles in Australian History – Kapyong 1oz silver proof coin commemorates this historic event.

Other Details: Pope Paul VI visited Australia in 1970, and this medal was issued to commemorate that occasion. He was the first Pope to visit Australia, arriving in Sydney on November 30. His duties included blessing the foundation stone of St Lucy's school in Sydney, speaking to Aboriginal communities and delivering sermons. Paul VI was the son of a prominent newspaper editor. He was ordained in Bescia on 29 May 1920, studied in Rome and entered the Vatican secretariat of state in 1922. He became of one two presecretaries to Pope Pius XII, and from 1954 to 1963 was Archbishop of Milan. He worked to improve relations between workers and employers and social relations more generally. In 1958 he became a Cardinal. As Pope he contined the reforms of John XXII, reconvening the Second Vatican Council and supervising reforms including the vernacularization and reform of the liturgy.

A Minnesota man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after he hacked a neighbor's Wi-Fi router and then launched a vengeful two-year campaign to frame them with child pornography and threats to government officials, including Vice President Joe Biden.

Called a "depraved criminal" by prosecutors, Barry Ardolf, a 46-year-old father of two, was sentenced this week, not for Wi-Fi hacking but for the threats, identify theft and child pornography that followed in its wake, all directed against a young couple, Matt and Bethany Kostolnik of Blaine, Minnesota, and their children.
"My husband and I had to explain to our young, innocent children way too early that there are evil people in the world -- and to never go in Barry Ardolf's yard," Bethany Kostelnik told U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

The ordeal began just two days after the Kostolniks moved into their new house, in August 2008. The couple called Blaine police to say that Ardolf had picked up their 4-year-old son and kissed him on the mouth. Ardolf decided to take revenge against them with what prosecutors called a "bizarre and calculated campaign of terror."
Wired's story on the case, by David Kravets, includes a link to the sentencing memo, which gives details of the case.
In early 2009, Ardolf began a systematic and eventually successful effort to crack the admittedly weak WEP security of the Kostolnik's Wi-Fi router. According to prosecutors, he spent nearly two weeks researching it, downloading tools like Aircrack, and running the attack. But once he succeeded, he had full access to the family's computers, data and both personal and work-related email accounts.
Among other things, Kravets reports that Ardolf emailed child porn to a co-worker of Matt Kostolnik, a lawyer with a local law office, and sent flirtatious emails, from Kostolnik's real email account, to women in the firm.
That triggered an inquiry by Kostolnik's superiors. When he told them he had no idea what was happening, they hired investigators to examine the Kostolniks' computers and network. They concluded that an unknown device had access and with the family's permission installed a packet sniffer to trace the intruder.
In May 2009, Kravets reports, "the Secret Service showed up at Kostolnik's office to ask about several threatening e-mails sent from his Yahoo account, and traced to his IP address, that were addressed to Biden and other politicians.: Part of the message to Biden read: "I swear to God I'm going to kill you!"
The packet logs finally bore fruit. A forensics computer investigator found the e-mail sessions sending the threats and in the associated packet information discovered Ardolf's name and his Comcast account.
That was enough for search warrant of Ardolf's home in the summer of 2009, which apparently confiscated over a dozen computers and dozens more storage devices. Investigators eventually found a vast amount of damning evidence, "including copies of data swiped from the Kostolniks' computer, and hacking manuals with titles such as "Cracking WEP Using Backtrack: A Beginner's Guide;" "Tutorial: Simple WEP Crack Aircrack-ng" and "Cracking WEP with BackTrack 3 - Step by Step instructions," Wired reports. "They also found handwritten notes laying out Ardolf's revenge plans, and a cache of snail mail that Ardolf had apparently stolen from the Kostolniks' mail box and stashed under his bed."

Micrisoft reporter Mary Jo Foley from her “(Not so) Crazy Micro Rumors”file at ZDNet indicates that Windows8 will be ready for production by April 2012.In this fall of mid-September at Microsoft’s Build Conference, Microsoft will release a beta build of Windows8. Relying on her expertise, Foley offered a few facts to consider when addressing these tips. For one, she said, the Windows 8 team is staying mum on a release date, saying only that the final version will come 24 to 36 months after Windows 7, but not specifying whether that means the July 2009 RTM date or the October RTM launch.Second, Foley said that Microsoft often builds in some extra time into its target dates and supposes that the summer 2012 release that’s been expected since the operating system was announced may have had that extra wiggle room.Julie Larson-Green, vice president of Windows Experience post in company blog said several cues from Windows8’s mobile platform and will be for both tables and desktop computers, and it has the ability to snap and resize an application, and a user-friendly file system.

Yet another build of Windows 8 has been leaked to the Internet and is now available to download from private FTPs. After 7850, 7955 and 7959 builds, the x64 version of Windows 8 build 7989 has made its way on to the web. This build doesn’t seem to have any new major improvements other than a new boot screen and UI enhancements.

The build string 7989.winmain.110421-1825 indicates that it was compiled on 21st April, 2011. The build comes with a new betta fish boot screen and some other UI enhancements. Users are reporting that there are a few new wallpapers and some UI enhancements in this leaked build.

We don’t encourage our readers to download leaked Windows 8 builds as they might be infected with malicious items.

If you are planning on attending the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) next week, I though I would give you a heads up on a couple of the sessions you may want to attend while your in Los Angeles.
For those not familiar with WPC, it is an annual gathering for the Microsoft partner community to learn about Microsoft’s roadmap for the upcoming year, network and build connections, share best practices, experience the latest product innovations and learn new skills and techniques. Since 2003, the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference provides a unique 5-day event for thousands of partners from over 100 countries to plan their business strategies for the upcoming year. WPC kicks of Monday July 11th and runs through July14th.
Here are some key sessions to check out:

Simplify BitLocker Support with MBAM

This part three of our three part series on MBAM from AJ Smith.
In recent blog posts, I’ve described how Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Management (MBAM) simplifies BitLocker Drive Encryption provisioning and provides compliance reporting that can help you quickly determine the status of the entire organization or a single computer. This is my last blog post in the series, and I’m going to use it to describe how MBAM can simplify BitLocker support.
Before describing specific capabilities, an important detail is that MBAM provides an alternative to storing BitLocker recovery data in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), which all AD DS administrators can see. Also, some organizations do not want to store recovery data in AD DS because they don’t want to grant the Helpdesk access to it, and AD DS stores recovery data in clear text. Instead, MBAM stores BitLocker recovery data in an encrypted Microsoft SQL Server database. Only authorized users can access this data. Recovery data is more secure by limiting access to it.
The most obvious way MBAM can simplify BitLocker support is by streamlining drive recovery for the Helpdesk. Figure 1 shows the Drive Recovery webpage in MBAM. If a user calls the Helpdesk because he is in BitLocker recovery mode, the Helpdesk doesn’t look up the drive’s recovery key in AD DS. Instead, the Helpdesk uses MBAM to quickly look up the recovery key based on its ID

Staying with the theme that limited access to recovery data is a good thing, MBAM enables single-use recovery keys. When the Helpdesk retrieves and uses a recovery key, the MBAM client automatically generates a new recovery key for the computer. The original recovery key can’t be used again to recover the computer’s hard drive. Why? What if the user decides to jot down the recovery key and stuff it in his computer bag in case he ever needs it again? The hard drive might as well be unencrypted. Single-use recovery keys help prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to the hard drive even if they get access to a previously used recovery key.
Drive recovery is the most exciting way that MBAM streamlines BitLocker support. A less dramatic but no less effective way it reduces support costs is by empowering users to do basic tasks without calling the Helpdesk. For example, they can encrypt their hard drives or change their PINs. Users can be more self-sufficient, and they can do it with standard user accounts.
There you have it. By using MBAM, the Helpdesk can spend less time supporting BitLocker. Users can do more without calling the Helpdesk, and when the Helpdesk does receive calls, it can resolve them more quickly. I encourage you to test MBAM in your own lab. Keep the security team off your back with MBAM reporting

This part two of our three part series on MBAM from AJ Smith.
In my last blog post, I described how Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM) can simplify BitLocker Drive Encryption provisioning. In this blog post, I’ll describe how MBAM makes it easier to monitor your computers for compliance with the BitLocker policy that you deployed.
While MBAM does a great job of helping you provision BitLocker, one of the areas it shines the most is compliance reporting. The reports it includes can help you quickly determine the status of the entire organization or a single computer. They can also help you monitor access to the MBAM databases.
Imagine that a user loses his laptop computer, and it contains confidential data. With MBAM, you can quickly look up the computer to determine whether it was compliant with BitLocker policy. You will know immediately whether the loss represents any risk.
MBAM provides the following reports in the MBAM management console:

Enterprise Compliance Report. This report can tell you at a glance the BitLocker compliance status of your entire organization. Figure 1 shows an example. In this case, about half the computers are compliant, one fourth are not compliant, and another fourth are exempt.
Computer Compliance Report. This report indicates whether a specific computer or a specific user’s computers are compliant with BitLocker policy. In the scenario where a user loses his laptop computer, you would use this report to determine its status.
Recovery Audit Report. This report indicates who has accessed recovery key information, successfully or not.
Hardware Audit Report. This report indicates who has changed the hardware compatibility list and when the MBAM client discovers new hardware. When you enable hardware compatibility checking, the MBAM client uses the hardware compatibility list to determine whether each computer model supports BitLocker.

You’re not limited to the reports that MBAM offers. You can also create custom compliance reports by using the built in SQL Server Reporting Services tools.
Compliance reporting can give you peace of mind. You know whether the computers in your organizations are compliant with BitLocker policy or not. Another great capability that MBAM offers is reducing support costs and end user downtime associated with BitLocker.
In my next blog post, I’ll describe how MBAM enables the support desk to quickly and securely unlock a BitLocker hard drive. Windows Thin PC Now Available
My name is Balagopalan Nikhil, and I'm a product manager in Microsoft's Desktop Virtualization product management team. Today I am happy to announce that Windows Thin PC is available to Microsoft Software Assurance (SA) customers for download from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center. As virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployments continue to grow, customers told us they needed an easy way to repurpose their existing PCs as thin clients. This resulted in the evolution of Windows Thin PC, which provides organizations with the following benefits:
Reduces the cost of VDI at the endpoint. Windows Thin PC is an SA benefit and, hence, is free to our Windows Client SA customers. Windows Thin PC leverages your existing investments in hardware, since you can repurpose existing PCs. Since the Windows Thin PC device is covered under SA, it does not require the additional Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) license that other thin clients need for VDI.
Delivers an excellent thin client experience. Windows Thin PC supports RemoteFX, which provides users with a local-like remote desktop experience. It also supports write filters, which block writes to the hard disk, thereby enabling the Windows Thin PC to return to a pristine state on every reboot.
Provides IT with an Enterprise. Windows Thin PC images can be deployed and managed through System Center Configuration Manager, making it easier to leverage existing investments in management. Windows Thin PC includes various security features found in Windows 7 Enterprise, such as BitLocker, AppLocker, and DirectAccess. Windows Thin PC also enables organizations to extend their investments in Forefront Endpoint Protection (FEP).

Consumerization of IT and Flexible Workstyle Solutions

The culture of work has changed dramatically during the last decade. The way people in your organization work, get things done, and collaborate has undergone a profound transformation. At the center of this transformation is a workforce that is increasingly mobile, fast-paced, and tech-savvy. People have high expectations for the devices and applications they use, and they are eager for simpler, more integrated solutions that adapt to their needs and style. They are looking for solutions that connect their personal and professional lives, and that enable them to work with maximum effectiveness, make decisions with greater insight, and uncover new opportunities with greater speed.
This shift, called Consumerization of IT, can offer a competitive advantage for companies, allowing them to unleash creativity, insight, and the commitment of their employees. Consumerization of IT moves IT away from managing an optimized desktop environment and toward building support for flexible workstyle solutions for their employees.
Flexible workstyle solutions offer three key benefits to your business: 1) People will be more productive because they can get work done anywhere, on a variety of devices, with instant access to the information they need and the people they count on; 2) People will value a workspace that anticipates their needs, remembers their preferences, and adapts to their style; and 3) Your business can rely on an intelligent infrastructure that's smart, safe, and easy to manage.
This is all great, but as IT professionals what we need to know is what to do when 100 iPads or Android slates walk through the door. What happens when an unmanaged, unsecure device comes into our environment? What are some options for managing these devices?
Option 1: Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager
System Center Configuration Manager has the ability to provide basic management for all Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) connected devices. Supported features include discovery/inventory, settings policy, and remote wipe. System Center Configuration Manager also supports on-premises Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 and hosted Exchange solutions.
Option 2: Microsoft Forefront Unified Access Gateway
Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG) provides a range of capabilities including authentication, endpoint health detection, enterprise readiness, edge ready, and information leakage prevention. Forefront UAG provides support for non-Windows devices and also supports Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Dynamics CRM, Microsoft SharePoint, Internet Information Services (IIS), IBM, SAP, Oracle, Active Directory, Active Directory, Federation Services, RADIUS, LDAP, and Terminal Services/Remote Desktop Services.

June was a busy month for Office! Office 2010 SP1 was just released and Office 365 has moved out of Beta and into full production.
First, let us take a look at Office 2010 SP1. Office 365 launched to great fanfare with 24 hours of continuous events and coverage by major press outlets like the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, InformationWeek, and IDG News.
Office 365 is Microsoft's Software as a Service productivity offering, which means that, with one subscription, Microsoft will host and maintain your SharePoint, Exchange, and Lync servers in our datacenters and provide users with Office Professional Plus via a subscription. This means that organizations of all sizes now have access to advanced client and server functionality that, in the past, only large enterprises could afford to deploy and maintain.

Application Reputation For Your Enterprise

As more corporate employees use the web, it is important for companies to stay vigilant about the threats a company and its employees can face online. One increasingly popular attack method among malware authors is to use social engineering techniques to trick a user into downloading and installing malicious software. Examples of this type of attack include websites that pretend to scan your computer and get you to download fake antivirus software, or sites that prompt you to download an application so that you can watch movies and TV shows for free. The premise behind such attacks is to deceive the end user.
To help keep your corporate employees safe, Internet Explorer 9 adds a layer of defense against such socially engineered attacks. This layer, called Smart Screen Application Reputation, can take a closer look at the download and check to see if the download is reputable. Reputable programs, such as ones that are commonly downloaded or are signed by trusted 3rd parties are less likely to be malicious. By utilizing reputation data, Internet Explorer warns users when they download an application without reputation, thus helping people make better decisions about online safety. In a blog post, the Internet Explorer team outlined just how effective this technology can be in helping keep users safe.

Application Reputation helps protect users from newly release malware programs that have not yet been detected by existing defense mechanisms.
Users are choosing to delete or not run malware 95% of the time from the new Application Reputation warnings.
From our data, the typical user will only see 2 warnings per year. This means that for the majority of the time, a user's download experience will be uninhabited by unhelpful warnings.

Application Reputation in Internet Explorer 9 is an important feature that can go a long way in keeping your corporate infrastructure and end users safe. With Internet Explorer's excellent support for Group Policy, an IT administrator can control aspects of this feature like:

Prevent users from bypassing SmartScreen Filter warnings
Prevent users from bypassing SmartScreen Filter's application reputation warnings about files that are not commonly downloaded from the Internet
Turn off Managing SmartScreen Filter for Internet Explorer 9 or 8
Enable or disable SmartScreen Filter in various zones

On June 29, Microsoft made its second preview build of Internet Explorer (IE) 10 available to testers for download.
“IE10 Platform Preview 2, the same HTML5 engine seen in the recent public ‘Windows 8; demos, is now available for download,” Microsoft officials blogged on the IE Blog today. The new build is available via this link.
The new preview build provides support for SS3 Positioned Floats, HTML5 Drag-drop, File Reader API, Media Query Listeners and initial support for HTML5 Forms, according to the post. There are also general HTML5 application performance improvements, battery-life-efficiency improvements and overall web-application security improvements, the team members said.
Microsoft is building around the “Trident” rendering engine in IE 10 with Windows 8. Windows officials have said that Microsoft will expect developers to use HTML5, JavaScript and CSS to build new immersive applications for Windows 8. Microsoft execs so far have made no statements about how/when/if the company will also support other development technologies in Windows 8.
Microsoft officials have said to expect new test builds of IE 10 every three months. The first IE 10 preview was released in April 2011.

According to a report by DisplayBank in 2008 over 14.9 million netbooks were sold with that number expected to almost double in 2009. Netbooks have become a great secondary PC when you want a very portable and low cost way to do basic computing. Many ship with Windows XP home edition but that is just not as fun and helpful to use as Windows 7.
Like many of you I loaded Windows 7 on my netbook and it performed just OK. It provided a huge performance improvement over Windows Vista but was not as snappy as I wanted. The key to speeding up Windows 7 on a netbook with limited resources is to turn off and disable features that you don’t need. After all, it’s a netbook and there are many Windows components that will never be used. Additionally, disabling un-needed components will extend your battery life since fewer processes will be using the CPU running in the background.
Fine Tune Visual Settings
The Windows 7 eye candy is the main cause of GUI slowness. While my netbook has a decent graphics card that can display Aero Glass it can be choppy at times. Follow these steps to improve the performance of the interface:
Click on the Start Button and type in adjust the appearance and hit Enter. This will load the Visual Effects performance options.

On this screen I suggest disabling the following settings by removing the check:

Animate controls and elements inside windows
Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing
Enable transparent glass
Fade or slide menus into view
Fade or slide ToolTips into view
Fade out menu items after clicking
Show shadows under windows (this may be worth the performance hit for some)
show thumbnails instead of icons
show translucent selection rectangle
Show window contents while dragging
Slide open combo boxes

Click OK when you are finished.
Remove Startup Programs
Nothing wastes resources more is startup programs that you don’t need. Click on the Start Button and type in msconfig and hit Enter.
When the System Configuration utility is loaded click on the Startup tab.

Remove the check next to any applications you don’t need and click OK.
Disable Services
Now it’s time to trim the Windows services running in the background of your computer.
Click on the Start Button and type in services.msc and hit Enter.

When the Services management console is shown you can stop and disable services by selecting the service, right clicking and selecting Properties. Then change the Startup type to Disabled and hit the Stop button. Finally click OK to return to the Services management console.
I recommend disabling the following services on a netbook:

Block Level Backup Engine Service
Bonjour Service (from iTunes)
Certificate Propagation
Group Policy Client (if not on domain)
HomeGroup Listener
HomeGroup Provider
Offline Files
Portable Device Enumerator Service
Security Center*
Software Protection (make sure you activate Windows first)
SSDP Discovery
Windows Defender*
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
Windows Search

Keep in mind that if you use any of these services or applications that depend on them they will no longer function. E.g. if you are a homegroup user don’t disable the Homegroup Provider.
* Make sure you use other security software if you disable these services.
Install More RAM
There is really no good substitute to having plenty of ram in a computer. You can use ReadyBoost but with memory prices so cheap why not just buy more. I purchased a 2GB chip for my netbook for $16 (hopefully the mail-in rebate will come through).
The popular Intel Atom processor netbooks use the Mobile Intel 945GSE Express Chipset that has a max of 2GB of ram supported. The amount of expansion slots or if your netbook even has one depends on the vendor and model of your netbook.
I suggest picking up a 2GB stick of PC2-5300 DDR2 at 667 Mhz on a 200 pin SO-DIMM. That is the type of memory required for the Mobile Intel 945GSE Express Chipset.
Installing is simple. Lenovo even has a video for the Ideapad S10.

Most guides will tell you to turn off all the aero features and use no background wallpaper. That’s not useful, that’s more like a trade-off, because who wouldn’t want a nice desktop? And AeroSnap is really useful! I agree that you can get some more performance by doing this, but it’s not worth it if you are not on a netbook. If you think you don’t need a “fancy” desktop, then feel free to do it anyway and adjust your PC for best performance (link below).
First, let’s think about it .. what is really consuming a lot of CPU and memory? Right! All the services that are running in the background all the time.

3. Select “Adjust for best Performance” or at least uncheck the first two entries

Turn off services and boost your Windows 7 gaming performance!

To turn off all those unnecessary services we use a tool called “GameBooster”, it’s obviously only one of the ways to do it, but it’s a lot faster than doing it manually. You can temporarily stop all services (that are not required) while you play. Best of all, you can even edit the services list with just a couple clicks and add more services to get even more performance.

To add any other services, click on “Options”-”Edit Service List”. Now, simply add any services using this format: RemoteRegistry=1

Update 04/21: This tweak does not seem to have great effects on your boot time. Instead use a startup programs manager for Windows 7 and remove as many startup programs as you possibly can.
Do you have a dual-core or quad-core processor? Great, let’s lower the boot time of Windows 7:
1. Click on Start, enter “msconfig” into the search field
2. Open the “boot” tab
3. Click on Advanced
4. Check “Number of proccessors” and select “2″ or “4″ from the dropdown menu. (obviously, you can only select it if you have a dual-core/quad-core).

Speed up Windows 7: Change Taskbar Thumbnail Preview Time

1. Click on Start, enter “regedit” into the search field.
2. Goto: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse

3. Double-click on “MouseHoverTime” and change the value to 100 or lower:

1. Open the registry editor (enter regedit into search field)
2. Go to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control”
3. Lower the value (12000 is the default value = 12 seconds) to a value of your choice

Speed Up Application Access – Increase your productivity

First of all create a folder “QuickStart” somewhere on your PC. Right-click on your taskbar:

Locate the folder “QuickStart” (you just created the folder so yo should know where it is) and then click “Ok”. You are almost done, but we don’t want that ugly text on our taskbar that is using a lot of space, turn it off:

Right-click on the new toolbar and uncheck “Show Text” and “Show Title”! Now drag the toolbar to the left until it’s below the main icons and you will have something like this:

Ok, now all unnecessary services are stopped. What would be the next logical step? When AMD and Microsoft were not able to increase the CPU power significantly any more, they simply added more CPU’s, that’s why we have dual and quad-core CPU’s nowadays. So, what you can do is to get more RAM. However, we don’t want to buy anything new, because we’re on a low budget. Although, I am sure that you own an USB-stick , right?
Since Windows Vista there is a little feature, that most people do NOT use effectively. To be honest with you, I haven’t used it myself and I might run into errors while I try to show it to you. The feature is called ReadyBoost and can give you up to 6% more performance. This depends on the amount of RAM you have. Low-End system with less RAM will see a great performance increase and many applications will load faster. Since Windows 7 there is no longer a memory limit of 4GB and you can use several devices for ReadyBoost.
1. Plugin your USB-stick
2. Move all your files on that stick into a folder on your hard drive to make room.
3. Start the Explorer (Windows + E), do a right-click on your drive and select properties.
4. Open the tab ReadyBoost and pick Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost. Click on Apply.
5. Repeat the steps 1-4 for all other devices (unlimited)

ReadyBoost - increase your performance by 4-6%

Ok, so we added a ReadyBoost device. Let’s see what it looks like:

On the drive you can find a cache file now that should be pretty big. I still had some other files on the stick, because this is my MP3-player.

What’s next? Right, did it really improve my performance or is a USB-stick (not even USB2.0) insufficient? First of all, I did a check to see if the ReadyBoost drive is working.
1. Goto “Start” – Enter “Performance” into the search field
2. Click on “Performance Monitor”
3. Add “ReadyBoost Cache”

I started the game “Command&Conquer Red Alert 3″. I thought if my drive is working, I should be able to see something now – and I was right: Click here to open the results in a new windows .
According to Tom Archer, your card is supposed to have the following requirements:
2.5MB/sec throughput for 4K random reads and 1.75MB/sec throughput for 512K random writes
Tom also put together a great list that will answer any question you might have about ReadyBoost, for example:

Q: Aren’t Hard Disks faster than flash? My HDD has 80MB/sec throughput. A: Hard drives are great for large sequential I/O. For those situations, ReadyBoost gets out of the way. We concentrate on improving the performance of small, random I/Os, like paging to and from disk.

Speed test your SD Card, CF Card, Flash Drive, HDD

Next, I downloaded a tool called “Crystal Disk Mark”, which is pretty cool to speed test your sd cards, flash drives and any other disk. In the meantime, I added my USB2.0 Card Reader, one 2GB CF Card and one 2GB SD Card (lucky me), because I was pretty sure that my MP3-Player wouldn’t perform very well.

Next, I tested my SD Card. I supposed it would be a lot slower – how wrong I was!

Last but not least, I tested my 1TB HDD to compare the three drives:

Conclusion? The SD card is performing really well and is my best choice for a ReadyBoost drive. Considering that I only have 2GB of RAM (dual channel), I think that this can increase my browsing speed. I usually have a lot of open tabs in firefox and as you might know firefox is eating a lot of resources, therefore I’m pretty happy about this setup now.

Can ReadyBoost really help me to boost my performance?

Is the performance boost notable? Well, it might be a bit early to comment on that, but I think it’s pretty safe to say that this is a good choice for low-end systems and systems with less RAM. On systems with more RAM than 1GB it will be only notable if you run some resource-hungry programs or programs that run a lot of small, random I/Os.

I have a 1970 commemorative medallion from Pope Paul VI, however, mine has PONTIFEX MAXIMUS, the old Roman title, rather than PONTIF MAXIMUS which is on your website, which is correct?

Microsoft’s demo of Windows 8 showed the company’s path to tablets, a unique user interface and a lot of promise. But Microsoft’s biggest risk with Windows 8 revolves around the familiar themes that always haunt the company: Reverse compatibility and the need to make Windows the Swiss Army knife of computing.
At AllThingsD’s D9 conference Windows chief Steven Sinofsky highlighted Windows’ futu re, which revolves around UI found on Windows Phone 7. Microsoft’s Live Tiles are sweet and a welcome addition to both tablets and PCs.
Can Microsoft manage all the complexity under the hood though?
Microsoft’s Julie Larson-Green, vice president of Windows Experience, provides a set-up to Windows 8 that sounds great in theory, but ridiculously hard to pull off. Larson-Green noted “effortless movement between existing Windows programs and new Windows 8 apps.”
Then Larson-Green got on the reverse compatibility train.

The full capabilities of Windows continue to be available to you, including the Windows Explorer and Desktop, as does compatibility with all Windows 7 logo PCs, software and peripherals.
Although the new user interface is designed and optimized for touch, it works equally well with a mouse and keyboard. Our approach means no compromises — you get to use whatever kind of device you prefer, with peripherals you choose, to run the apps you love. This is sure to inspire a new generation of hardware and software development, improving the experience for PC users around the world.

Mary Jo Foley adds:

This immersive UI is the new start screen for all versions of Windows 8: The tablet versions, the laptop/notebook/netbook versions and the desktop PC versions. Users will be able to switch between this UI and a more conventional Windows Aero type interface, it seems.

Sounds great right? Except for the complexity. There’s a reason why Apple has the iOS and the Mac OS. The devices those operating systems run are distinctly different. There are trade-offs involved. The iPad doesn’t do everything. Microsoft—and to a lesser extent Android—want tablets to do everything. They want tablets to be PCs.

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber gets to the point. Gruber likes the Windows 8 UI, but doesn’t see Microsoft answering the iPad bell. Why? The Windows 8 model is too complex. Gruber writes:

Windows 8 is trying to have it all, and I don’t think that can be done. You can’t make something conceptually lightweight if it’s carrying 25 years of Windows baggage.

From a business perspective, Microsoft’s approach is totally logical. You can’t simply cut off the Windows base. That works for Apple, but won’t fly with Microsoft, which has to reach back to support older platforms. Maybe virtualization ultimately helps this time machine support, but that approach can be clunky too. Perhaps if RIM’s frankentablet works I’ll be a believer.
Add it up and it’s hard to do it all. Microsoft may be able to pull software engineering perfection, but no compromises usually means there really are some for users in the delight department.
