PICK OF THE WEEK Opening this week in New York and L.A. on May 5 is David Zeiger’s great Sir! No Sir!, a rousing documentary about the little remembered G.I. protest movement against the Viet Nam war. Tthe film rewrites the history books as well as challenges our current conceptions about the right of enlisted military to protest foreign policy. Also this week, Todd Rohal’s The Guatemalan Handshake plays the Independent Film Festival of Boston before snaking around the country in various clubs and alternative theater venues. And one of our favorite movies ever arrives on DVD: Michelangelo Antonioni’s The Passenger, in which Jack Nicholson plays a journalist who impersonates a dead arms dealer in a series of moody encounters through Africa and Europe. Does This Look Familiar?
The latest Ask.com commercial has been running on TV for about week or so now. Maybe you've seen it? If not, you're in luck. Some folks wrote in, requesting that we post it on the blog and to tell them the name of the elusive song that plays during it.We live to give.
The song is Sentimental Lady by Bob Welch. Very catchy. The commercial is right here. Let us know what you think.

The Great Quake
On April 18th, 1906, a massive earthquake rattled the San Francisco Bay Area for nearly an entire minute followed by fires which left the city in ruins and an estimated 3,000 people dead. There are many great archival resources available online to see and explore, as well as many local Bay Area events.
As Gary points out, Ask.com's Smart Answers have many resources for both the 100 year anniversary of this tragic event, as well as more contemporary earthquake-related features; including a near real-time list of current earthquakes, earthquakes by area (if applicable), and even another on earthquake preparedness. As we look back at this destruction with awe and wonder, it is important to also think of the future. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there is "a 62% probability that at least one earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or greater will occur on a known or unknown San Francisco Bay region fault before 2032". Recent natural disasters such as last year's earthquake in Pakistan or Hurricane Katrina should serve to reminds us to prepare for the future as best we can.

Price Check
About six weeks ago this announced my new job at Ask.com.
My first month at Ask.com was, in a word, awesome! Many thanks to my new Ask.com colleagues for their many kind words and for a lot of help in getting me going with my new job. In the first month we got a lot done including several live presentations and a bunch of magazine interviews like this one.
As the original blog post points out, I'm a librarian by trade and also the editor and founder of two sites that continue while I work at Ask.
Allow me to formally introduce ResourceShelf and DocuTicker. I think one or both of these resources will be of interest to many of you. In other words, you don't have to be a librarian to find ResourceShelf and DocuTicker to find the sites useful and valuable. I'm happy to report that both sites have a large and growing readership outside of the library profession. These groups include journalists, educators, students, business people (especially in public relations and marketing) along with information and search geeks.
ResourceShelf has been online for over five years. In fact, we celebrated our fifth birthday on March 1st. What is it? A daily update of database news, search news, information industry happenings and a never ending stream of new resources ranging from new full text reports to lists and rankings to vertical search tools. Think of it as a tool that you can use to help build your own virtual Internet tool belt.
Next, is DocuTicker. This site, also updated daily, is where we post even more new, often just hours old, full text reports that we don't have room for on ResourceShelf. The content comes from a variety of government agencies, think tanks, non-government organizations, universities, etc. I'm also happy to report that ResourceShelf has a large subscriber base via Bloglines.
Full text RSS feeds for both sites are available: ResourceShelf DocuTicker I would like to invite all Ask.com Blog readers to stop by, take a look, and hopefully make both sites part of your regular reading routine. We update just about seven days a week.
Finally, three more brief points.
First, ResourceShelf and DocuTicker are independent sites. We are free to post what we like when we like. I think if you review ResourceShelf since I began at Ask.com, you'll see that our coverage and scope have not changed.
Second, although I'm the editor of both sites we have several other people, with more to come, contributing content and resources and occasional commentary.
Third, we've learned that although we update the site daily and offer an RSS feed many people still want a reminder in their email box. So, once a week we send out a weekly email newsletter with a few of the highlights from the past week.
That's it for now. Thanks for your interest. If all goes as planned I'll be posting to the blog on a regular basis with an occasional comment or two along with highlights from both blogs.
Cheers,

Update: Launching Tonight!
Thanks for your feedback! Due to popular demand, the launch will occur ahead of schedule. We're launching it tonight at 6pm PST, so be sure to visit Ask.com starting at that time if you'd like to check it out. (What better way to pre-party on a Friday night than to Gamma-test a new search product? Put on a little Duran Duran and test away!)
Gamma? Yes. The new product is being released in Gamma mode, which is one step beyond Beta, but still not ready for primetime. Thus, it will be live on Ask.com, for all users, during the test period. Please send us your comments with recommended improvements.
Details are below in an advance copy of the press release:

Ask.com Introduces RhymeRank™
Cutting Edge Technology Provides Phaster and Phresher Related Search Results
Oakland, CA, April 1, 2006 – Ask.com announced today the introduction of RhymeRank, an innovative search technology capable of producing related search results that rhyme with a searcher’s original query. The new product is located on the right-hand side of the Ask search results page, under the heading, “Rhyme Your Search.”
“This will go down as the day the momentum in the search wars shifted to Ask.com,” said Jim Lanzone, General Manager of Ask U.S. “When combined with our site’s already-powerful “Narrow Your Search” and “Expand Your Search” capabilities, “Rhyme Your Search” sets Ask.com apart with the unprecedented ability to suggest phat new ideas for your search.”
RhymeRank was developed at a top-secret laboratory near Ask’s headquarters in Oakland, California. It is based upon the educational theory that people commit information to memory more effectively when it is phonetically consistent. Understanding this, Ask hired dozens of experts to develop algorithms capable of producing the best and most irrelevant rhymes. For example, for the query, “Weight Watchers® Rewards”, Ask.com’s RhymeRank will suggest the following alternative searches:
Rhyme Your Searchmongolian hordesthe history of fordspictures of fjordsmaternity wardscreate free message boardsnames of drug lordstoward or towardschart of guitar cordsbill cosby awardsroman legions swords
“Web 3.0 is clearly upon us,” noted John Battelle, author of The Search, and one of the world’s leading experts on the search industry. “RhymeRank smartly builds upon the recent relaunch of Ask.com. This is a BIG DEAL and is the kind of innovation that demands Ask’s rivals stand up and take notice. Or to sit on the sidelines in the position of the lotus.”
“Aspiring rappers and poets are a huge, untapped market,” said lead engineer Keith Hogan. “Someone will win a Grammy or Pulitzer one day using this product. Or, at the very least, an Open Mic Night.”
Ask.com is a trademark of IAC Search & Media, Inc. All other marks are the trademarks of their respective owner.

What Should We Do?
Due to an unusual release schedule here at Ask this week, we are faced with an interesting dilemma. We have an amazing new feature in the pipe that searchers everywhere will benefit from, and it'll be ready to go out tomorrow. But if we release it on a Saturday, no one will hear about it.
Do we wait until Monday, so we can get more buzz? Or do we release it on Saturday, so people can start using it and benefiting right away? Please use the comments form below to cast your vote.

Ask.com Nederland: Search Better and Find Faster!
I am very proud to announce that Ask.com has landed in the Netherlands, as we have recently introduced the beta version of Ask.com Nederland. Our unique search technology is now available for all Dutch people to enjoy. Jeeves, our loyal butler has retired with honor and left us with a sleeker design and new search tools. Try it out and discover: Ask.com Nederland!
The Dutch press has picked up on the new site and wrote some very positive responses that confirm our expectation that Ask.com Nederland would be received with much enthusiasm:
“Ask.com is the only big search engine that divides the Web into 'site communities'”- Henk de Hooge, Dutch Cowboys“Like its competitors it is based on link popularity. But Ask.com takes it up a notch. It also analyzes the notoriety and 'reputation' that the links have among the experts of specific fields.”-Marco Derksen, Marketingfacts
We have also received some good feedback from users:“Lots of functionality and no baloney! Exactly right! Keep it up!”“I love the site. … and the tools palette is really great.”
With Ask.com Nederland we enter the Dutch search arena with a unique and refreshing approach to search. The search technology that Ask.com has developed is unrivaled and interprets the Web as it is naturally structured, in organically formed topic communities. This allows us to identify the most authoritative and respected web sites for your queries.
Besides offering a first-class search engine, Ask.com also comes with a package of features and tools united in our “Toolbox”. These search tools make searching and finding things even easier and transform web surfing into a social activity:
One of the best examples of the “social’ character of our search tools is MijnAsk, the personalized search service that lets you save web pages, upload and save images, and transfer and share information by organizing contents in folders. I use it on a daily basis myself. My personal favorite in the Toolbox is Bloglines. With Bloglines you can keep track of the blogs and RSS feeds that are most important and interesting to you - and even create your own blog - without installing any software. For our Dutch site, we made sure to include Binoculars, our tool that creates previews of Web sites without having to click through to the site, a very nifty and great time-saving tool. We are also very happy to have Image Search on our Dutch site; search specifically among the billions of images that are out there.
And this is just the beginning. The coming months we will add a wide range of search tools like News, Smart Answers, Encyclopedia, Related Search and much more to the Toolbox. In the meanwhile we will keep improving our main objective: to be the most advanced search engine that finds the best results the fastest.
We love to hear what you think of Ask.com Nederland. Please send us your feedback at this address: opmerkingen@ask.help.com.
Search and you shall find with Ask.com Nederland. Enjoy!

Episode 3 of the Mad Techie Show
Great news! The third episode of the Mad Techie Show has been posted over on MediaSwamp.com. Thanks to The Agency for producing the show. They do a fine job.
I was joined in studio by Patrick Gallucci for the show. As I've mentioned in earlier posts, Patrick works for Microsoft in their consulting services group. Specifically, he is a data services architect and is a database expert. If you are interested in SQL Server 2005 (BTW, Bink says Service Pack 1 is now available) then this is the show for you.

Steve Jobs Is a Prick
What an ungrateful piece of crap this guy turned out to be.
This is why I hate Apple. Okay, that might be a little harsh. Actually, I love Apple for what it is, a cutting edge American company that believes in innovation and good old fashioned capitalism. I even like some of their products.
But I hate Steve Jobs and have since the beginning because of his ridiculous ego. He better watch it - if his head gets any bigger he is likely to topple over.
Let's compare. Bill Gates gets super rich and spends half his time giving his fortune away to education, charities, and fighting disease and poverty around the world.
Meanwhile, when little Stevie Jobs enjoys great success and wealth, he becomes a gigantic prick and won't even write a foreword for Steve Wozniak, the man that put his sorry ass on the map.
Grrrr...Think different indeed.

MySpace Gets Smart
Well it's about time the folks over at MySpace got smart.
Hiring Hemanshu Nigam is a great start. He is a real heavy hitter when it comes to protecting children online. (So does this mean he is no longer working for MS? That would be a real loss for them.)
They also have plans to introduce an advertising campaign to warn kids of the dangers. This is also a great idea.
I would go one step further, and meet with law enforcement to setup funding to hire additional officers for conducting online investigations (basically the officers pose as vulnerable kids and then when a perp arranges to meet "kids" or sends them explicit content they bust 'em.)
Hang 'em high.

The Day the Music Died?
Robert Scoble is done blogging! Well, at least for a couple of weeks. I just read on his blog that he intends on taking some time off.
I can't blame him. Although I have only been blogging for a short time, I can attest to the fact that it can be difficult to find the time to blog especially while trying to do your *real* job at the same time. Doing both for an extended period of time like Robert must really wear on you.
My personal goal is to have activity on this blog everyday. So far I've fallen short of that goal but I'll keep trying.
That brings up another question. Why blog at all? Besides a few hits a day, this blog is not generating much traffic. So why invest the time at all? For me it's simple. I have fun doing it.

Time Zone App on BCLTeam Blog
I was reading Robert Scoble's blog and learned that the BCL Team is blogging again. For .NET developers, this is a great blog to read since this is the team that is responsible for the base classes in .NET.
Of particular interest to me was the time zone demo app. This could have some real uses for my company (a global relocation company).

Terry Cowart Wants To Innovate
Terry Cowart, a good friend of mine and a consulting architect with UniSys has launched a website aimed at innovation. Looks interesting. Sort of a think tank consultancy?
He better be careful with that innovation stuff. Look where it landed Microsoft?!?
Now MS can't even add new features to their operating systems without a bunch of panty waist (E.U. Commission) losers crying about it. Sorry. I call it how I see it.

I'm sorry, i've gotta ask...
Why is it harder and why does it take longer to add a new service/card/phone to a cellular account than it does to buy a car? I should be able to walk in, pick a device, pick a plan, hand over a DL and a credit card, sign a receipt, and be on my way. Instead, I sit here while two Verizon reps try to figure out how to take my money.
This is not unique to verizon either. All cellular providers operate this way. All the while, they spend their time trying to figure out how to rape the consumer by adding metered fees to internet usage by content providers. Nevermind that they are already getting paid for that traffic coming and going from the ISP's, businesses, and consumers.
Here's an idea telcos...if you take care of your current users, perhaps make the process to BUY YOUR CRAP easier, maybe you wouldn't be scraping by to survive. Simplistic, I know, but obvious also.
As a good, flaky friend over at kickedinthecrotch.com would say, this is worthy of a 5 out of 5 boots rating.
I've now been sitting here for 45 minutes. Please kill me now.

SmartComputing magazine has published a 160 page reference on everything yahoo! The mag details almost all of yahoo's 119 services in over 60 articles which cover 160 pages of Yahoo! love. I've been able to read the entire magazine thanks to Verizon. ;-)

New Version of Ad Center is coming
Coming fresh off the heels of this month's latest ComScore numbers, which shows that MSN and Yahoo continue to slip in the market share wars (grrrrrrrrrrr), MSN is releasing a new version of Ad Center today. This may be too little too late. It pains me to no end to watch Microsoft's inability to turn the battleship. Can we get rid of some of the travelling career ladder climbers and get some fresh, hungry, passionate people in there? Please?!?
Ask gains .04% of share and Google continues to devour the market in spite of itself. Credit where it's due: the Google calendar looks like there was some consideration to having the product completed before it was actually released. After more than 48 hours in the marketplace, the internet giant has not closed off or limited access to its newest offering. This is definitely a step in the right direction.
Scott: Thanks for the beanbag and lava lamp. They look nice in the office. Now let's work on the bad behavior of some of your peers. ;-)

Hi Mike and members, I sit here in front of our computer with many emotions wondering why life bring us such tourment. I was sexually abused as a seven year old little girl and I wonder if I will ever have the pain go away. I am now 33 and the more I think about it the more I wonder why did this happen to me. This is a very big step for me as I tell people about my pain because I hid it for so many years. I still feel dirty and ashamed because I let someone violate me and had no control over my life. I hid this from my family until my mid 20's and then I only told my mom. I told Mike next, and 2 years ago I told my sister and brother. My dad dosen't know because Iam afraid it will hurt him to much. When I tell people I am afraid they won't see me as the same person as before. This is a big step for me because I don't want to deal with it because the feelings hurt so much. Well a lot more people know now. Thank you for your time. I do read about imu almost every day but do not post all the time. Especially on this topic because I don't know what to say only that it hurts so bad. Well that's why it has my interest. I have to go now because I am full of tears and snots. bye for now, Tracy

Hello Mike & Tracy, I don't think either of you realize how much of a blessing you are and will be to so many. You are both very courageous. Tracy, don't be afraid of what others will think of you. If they don't recognize and appreciate what a courageous and loving person you are, they are the ones with the problems. Mike, as stated in another post...."You will never be alone again." UVACA will assure all children never have to be alone ever. God Bless You, Karen_________________Join Award Winning Watkins Summit Group http://www.tsginfo.com/index.php?rc=KE3492 Skype me: kdearll

Hi Mike I believe that you were sent to us for a reason, reading your story I now understand why UVACA was created. I also believe that this was part of Gods plan for you, before this, no-one was truly listening. But, by creating this program it's a voice that will be heard by millions and millions! With the Lord as your guide the voice of UVACA will be heard! Warmest regards my friend Elizabeth

Frappr of the Day: Too Cute! December 18th, 2005
Too cute! A stress reliever for all of you students out there!
—
In other news, now that Frappr has become HUGE with so many features, we’ve been quite busy trying to keep on top of things. We try to read every single email sent to us, but we’re quite backlogged! We’ve been getting a lot of requests for certain features, which will be added *very* soon!
We’re working every day to make Frappr better and better, so stay tuned…With finals over and school on winter break, we can work on Frappr even MORE than before! =)

Valentines in December December 15th, 2005
Just diggin’ through some of the site, and I discovered that two people actually hooked up because they saw each on a Frappr map. Wow, that totally made my day.
If you have any story you would like to share about hookin’ up through Frappr we’d love to hear about it =). Comment on this blog, and don’t worry, we’ll make sure to only post the ones that don’t reveal too much info.

Good ol’ California December 5th, 2005
3:49am Pacific Time
I’m sitting in my hotel room waiting for my flight back to Illinois at 6am. Kun is passed out on the bed, while I’m idly monitoring Frappr servers and traffic. I took a photo of Kun sleeping, which I’ll post when I get back to my dorm room in Illinois.
So in the last few days, we pushed out some major changes, namely a fully featured My Frappr homepage, which brings a more individual aspect to our strong group-oriented user base. Members can now add their friends to their own personal Frappr Map! We’ve also included all the bells and whistles such as Profile, Photos, and Comments.
I voted to call it “My Friends” or “My Frappr Friends” to go along with My (Frappr) Groups and My (Frappr) Places, but the name “My Frappr” stuck =P.
In other news, we got a Mac PowerBook G4! I’ve been developing and testing using the new Firefox 1.5 for Mac OS X, and Frappr seems to run great on it! As usual, we still test with IE and Firefox on Windows.

So hungry… November 22nd, 2005
5:14am. So hungry…need food. I foraged and found a banana. I wish I had some Potbelly’s sandwiches:
Kun and I just finished pushing out our major changes for the week. I added My Places as well as some minor enhancements and bugfixes:- fixed a bug where Frapprs with foreign languages did not display shoutouts correctly- added Delete button to My Photos- added sorting for Member Lists on Frappr maps- added privacy settings for My Places - everyone please go to Edit Places and set the privacy settings!

Wait and See November 22nd, 2005
We’ve finally managed to push some of the changes we’ve worked on for the past week. The biggest change? My Frappr Places! Now you have a personalized map for your own to mark up however you like. Theres more. You can see what others are putting on the map as well! Its a great way to discover places and happenings around your neighborhood, as well as to share the places you enjoy.
Some other changes: We’ve reworked the layout for the front page. We’ll be introducing super cool features the rest of this week, and wanted space on the front page to tell everyone about them. Another change was layout for Frappr maps. We want to thank Ricardo for emailing us with some great layout work (we shamelessly took his layout and plugged them into Frappr =P).
Anyway, stay tuned. This week we’ll be releasing some really neat features… wait and see!

The Frappr Map Song November 20th, 2005
I’ve been playing catch up going through Frappr’s customer emails and I stumbled across an email from a user who (in his own words) created a “ridiculously stupid song” called “The Frappr Map Song”. If you’ve got nothing else to do, stop by this URL and check out the first song ever made about Frappr! =P

Updated member features! November 16th, 2005
I’ve added some new member account features such as Profiles and moving your marker closer to where you live. Check out mine!
Oh yeah, Kun also stuck in a “Forgot Password?” link - sorry for all of you who have been emailing us like crazy! =/

So who won? November 16th, 2005
We’re about to change the front page of our site to show who won - sorry about the delay guys! The millionth member signed up on Nov 11 2005 at 8:32 am PST.
I spent the whole day coding up some more of the member features - the editing of member locations, passwords, and names - as promised. We should be ready to push out these changes soon! We’re also trying to add some new crazy features that I’m totally excited about! It should be realllly cool.
As usual, we’ve been reading all the emails that have been sent our way - if you guys haven’t received any replies, it doesn’t mean we didn’t see them! There are simply too many of them, so we’re a bit backlogged. Seems like some people are a bit confused on what Frappr Member/Accounts are, so I’ll update the FAQ in a bit.
In the meantime I have this paper to read for school. Blarg. If you guys are interested, it’s entitled “BIRCH: An Efficient Data Clustering Method for Very Large Databases”.. yeah…what o_O? Nevertheless, I’m convinced it could be useful for developing Frappr stuff.
Goodnight all.

Frappr! of the Day November 11th, 2005
Today’s Frappr of the Day is targetstores! I’m not quite sure if it was made by someone working for Target or not, but the creator’s innovative use of Frappr as a store locator caught our attention. Perhaps Wal-Mart will follow suit…? =)

Add your link to Rick Butts PR7 Press Release SiteApril 12th, 2006
Got an invite from Rick Butts to his new site just released.
It’s a big fat PR7 - and you can put your one way link there!
For the rest of April you can place posts or articles about yourbusiness, your product, or whatever on the site with a link back toyour website - and it will not cost you a penny.
This site is being pounded by the major search engines - so be wiseand post good stuff.
The little flags on the top right are translation buttons - so your articlewill be translated into those languages and crawled by the engines(using Google’s translation engine) and is already getting searches from foreign language queries.
Rick & Jon encourage you to promote your business - crawl aroundthe site - and post comments too.
Finally, if you would be so kind as to post a link on any site youhave with higher PR (Page Rank) to Press Release Monkey -http://www.PressReleaseMonkey.com
Go there soon and post.
Thanks and happy publishing!

Search Engine Keywords SelectionApril 7th, 2006
Search engines are the vehicles that drive potential customers to your websites. But in order for visitors to reach their destination - your website - you need to provide them with specific and effective signs that will direct them right to your site. You do this by creating carefully chosen keywords.
Think of the right keywords as the Open Sesame! of the Internet. Find the exactly right words or phrases, and presto! hoards of traffic will be pulling up to your front door. But if your keywords are too general or too over-used, the possibility of visitors actually making it all the way to your site - or of seeing any real profits from the visitors that do arrive - decreases dramatically.
Your keywords serve as the foundation of your marketing strategy. If they are not chosen with great precision, no matter how aggressive your marketing campaign may be, the right people may never get the chance to find out about it.

Retail This Gas Mileage Booster as a ResellerApril 4th, 2006
A fantastic formula that has been in use for a year now by the US Military will soon be available to sell to the public. Some commercial companies have been using it as well testing it on their fleet.
Now, an unprecedented opportunity is on the brink of being released, as the company that owns this money saving additive is accepting resellers and affiliates for this amazing product.
This product, is not available to the public, in stores or sold anywhere else. But YOU can be one of the first to sell this fuel and crankcase additive when it is released for sale by affiliates.

Gas prices continue to climb, and consumers are becoming increasingly frustrated by the rising cost of driving. But YOU can provide a PROVEN way to reduce this cost by selling this additive. Once it is released to affiliates the news will be out and EVERYONE will be scrambling to find this product.

A Better Web Experience
Firefox 1.5 has an intuitive interface and blocks viruses, spyware, and popup ads. It delivers Web pages faster than ever. And it’s easy to install and import your favorites. Packed with useful features like tabbed browsing, Live Bookmarks, and an integrated Search bar, Firefox will change the way you experience the Web, for the better.
Faster Browsing
Enjoy quick page loading as you navigate back and forward in a browsing session. Improvements to the engine that powers Firefox deliver more accurate display of complex Web sites, support for new Web standards, and better overall performance.
Automatic Updates
The new Software Update feature makes it easy to get the latest security and feature updates to Firefox. Firefox automatically downloads these small updates in the background and prompts you when they are ready to be installed.
Tabbed Browsing
Use tabbed browsing to open multiple Web pages in a single browser window, and quickly flip back and forth. Drag and drop open tabs to keep related pages together.
Improved Pop-up Blocking
Firefox’s built-in pop-up blocker has been enhanced to block more unwanted pop-up and pop-under ads.
Integrated Search
Tap into the power of the Web’s most popular search engines with the built-in Search bar, and easily add new engines.
Stronger Security
Firefox keeps you more secure when you’re browsing the Web, closing the door on spyware, worms, and viruses. The Firefox community of developers and security experts works around the clock to monitor security issues and release updates to better protect you.
Clear Private Data
Protect your privacy with the new Clear Private Data tool. With a single click, you can delete all personal data, including browsing history, cookies, Web form entries and passwords.
Live Bookmarks
Stay up to date with your favorite Web sites and blogs. Use Live Bookmarks that update themselves automatically with the latest content from the Web.
Accessibility
Firefox 1.5 delivers easier navigation for everyone, including those who are visually or motor-impaired. Firefox is the first browser to support DHTML accessibility, which, when enabled by Web authors, allows rich Web applications to be read aloud. Users may navigate with keystrokes rather than mouse clicks, reducing the tabbing required to navigate documents such as spreadsheets. Firefox 1.5 (Windows version) is also the first browser to meet US federal government requirements that software be easily accessible to users with physical impairments.
Customize Firefox
Select new button controls for your toolbars, install extensions to add new features, or change the look of your browser with themes - the way Firefox looks and works is under your control.
Next Generation Web Support
Innovative new Web applications and services deliver a richer Web experience. Support for open Web standards in Firefox ensures you can get the most out of this emerging class of Web-based tools.

Almost everyone is at risk for ID theft - even children
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/business/local/sfl-screditreport19xfeb19,0,7452023.story?coll=sfla-business-headlinesAlmost everyone is at risk for ID theft - even childrenBy Harriet Johnson BrackeySouth Florida Sun-SentinelFebruary 19, 2006When Harrison Ford in the current movie Firewall checks his credit report, he finds out he's been the victim of identity theft. Then the action begins. That drama happens to all sorts of people every day in South Florida.Identity thieves seem to haunt our state more than almost anywhere. In typical states, the Federal Trade Commission says it gets about four identity theft complaints for every 10 fraud complaints that it receives. From Florida, last year there were seven identity theft complaints to every 10 fraud complaints. There were 25,000 complaints about identity theft last year in all of Florida.A lot of them came from this region. The FTC listed the South Florida region as sixth in the nation for identity theft. Among major cities, its rate of almost 132 complaints to the federal agency for every 100,000 people puts the region ahead of New York, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco.Nationwide, an estimated 28 million adults have become identity theft victims since 2003.At risk: Practically anyone. Hispanics are the most victimized ethnic group, according to a survey from Javelin Strategy & Research. The rich, those with incomes of $150,000 or more, get hit often. And by age, it's the young, 18 to 29, who are targeted in the greatest numbers, according to the FTC.There's also a seriously disturbing increase in the theft of children's identities, which law enforcement officials say is beginning to show up locally. Complaints to the federal government have risen from only 6,500 three years ago to more than 11,000 last year about identity theft for those under the age of 18.What can you do? Besides guarding your personal information closely, you should regularly check your financial records to see what's on them."I think personally one of the most important things a consumer can do to minimize the risk of identity theft is to look at your credit report. You can see clearly whether there are accounts on there that may not be yours," said Cindy Liebes, assistant regional director in the FTC's Southeast Region office in Atlanta. It's not difficult to follow her advice. You can check your report once a year for free or pay a small sum to see it more often. Here's a guide to finding and reading credit reports.Harriet Johnson Brackey can be reached at hjbrackey@sun-sentinel.com or 954-356-4614.Copyright © 2006, South Florida Sun-Sentinel

It's 10 PM. Do You Know Where Your Identity Is?
It's 10 PM. Do You Know Where Your Identity Is?Global identity thieves may know their way around your computer better than you do. Welcome to the scary new world of zombies, RATs, Trojan horses and evil twins.BY BRIAN KREBSPublished in the February, 2006 issue of Popular Mechanics.PM: Who's Stealing Your Identity? Feb. 2006 Cover StoryThe factoid that got my attention was this:The group's website, shadowcrew.com, functioned as a sort of identity-theft eBay, a one-stop shop where criminals could buy and sell credit cards, Social Security numbers and mothers' maiden names like used car parts. Over two years, some 4000 ShadowCrew members had amassed two terabytes' worth of other people's lives--18 million e-mail accounts and related personal data--mainly by tricking the victims themselves into giving up their information.Lesson learned: Protect ourselves with the Identity Theft Shield and be vigilant!

Credit Card Offer Opt-out Instructions
The credit bureaus offer a toll-free number that enables you to get out of having card offers mailed to you for either five years…or permanently. Just phone 1-888-5-OPTOUT (567-8688). You will be prompted to provide some personal information, including your home telephone number, name, address, and social security number. All information provided is confidential and is used only to process your request. And if over time you get lonely for some junk mail and decide that you want to receive the card offers again, simply phone the same number and you will be added back on the list.Protect yourself and your spouse from Identity Theft with the Identity Theft Shield: http://prepaidlegal.com/idt/asmith

Jury Duty ID Theft Scam Spreads
(CBS) A new form of identity theft is targeting one of the nation's most important obligations, jury duty. The Early Show consumer correspondent Susan Koeppen reports that scam artists are banking on the seriousness most people attach to jury duty.Koeppen explains that the scammers figure their targets are good citizens who are willing to give up some key personal information because they're needed in the courtroom. One target of such a ploy, Bellevue, Colorado grandmother Diana Koenig, tells Koeppen she "was definitely duped, definitely, and it was so slick I didn't know it."Koenig knew better than to give out personal information over the phone but, several weeks ago, got a call from a woman saying she was with the district court."When she told me she was a clerk from the courts, I trusted her," Koenig says. The caller said Koenig and her husband were up for jury duty, and she needed their birthdates and Social Security numbers to send them a summons."I thought about it real quickly and decided, 'She must need this,' so I gave it to her," Koenig says. But when the summons never came, Koenig called the district clerk and got the shocking truth: That call wasn't from the court, but from a scam artist looking to steal her identity."I thought I was gonna have a heart attack right then. I knew I was in trouble," Koenig says. For the Rest of the story Click Here:

Medical Identity Theft: The Dark Side of Health Care Privacy
Larry Sobal column: Identity theft: the dark side of health care privacy
Posted November 20, 2005As a patient, your greatest fear is not your neighbors finding out about your most sensitive medical conditions, it's that your "nonpublic" information will be exploited by identity thieves gaining access to your clinical information. What this means is that your medical privacy and your overall identity, is more vulnerable than any time in history.
The term "identity theft" often is used to describe financial crimes, but true identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information to create new accounts to obtain money, goods, services, prescriptions, a driver's license or even commit crimes in your name. Unfortunately, the relationship between medical privacy and identity theft is growing stronger.
Think about it. How many places is your health information, including your Social Security number, stored these days? Considering database redundancy and the ease of electronic transmission, from your hospital to your insurance plan to your physician to your pharmacy and multiple points in between, it is not unusual for your personal data to reside in literally hundreds of sites.
Not only does this increase the odds of a breach in your medical security, but identity theft is now the No. 1 crime in the country.
Health care organizations are prime targets, and potentially prime leaks, because of their vast reservoirs of personal data. If you aren't worried about all of this, you certainly should be.Back in the old days (paper) you had two primary risks for inappropriate discovery and use of your health information. The first was a result of "shoulder surfing"— where nosey individuals simply listened in on your discussions or read it from your open medical record or a computer screen. The second was "Dumpster diving" where your records or billing receipts were picked from the garbage can.
The health care industry recognizes the challenge it faces and is using a vast array of resources to protect your information. One key step was the passage of sweeping legislation in 1996 known as HIPPA. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was created to focus on the security of health data.
Health care organizations, however, are just one place of potential risk. Due to stunning widespread corporate carelessness, representing all industries, the personal information of more than 46 million Americans was lost or stolen in the first half of 2005 alone.
The scary part is that your most likely thief may not be a stranger. According to a recent study by Javelin Strategy & Research, in 26 percent of all cases the fraud victims knew the person who had misused their personal information.
The TowerGroup, a unit of MasterCard International, reports that as much as 50 percent of identity fraud occurs with a family member or friend. Most experts recommend these steps:
Avoid carrying your Social Security card, birth certificate or even your checkbook with you.
Never give out your Social Security number.
Add passwords to online and offline accounts and don't use your mother's real maiden name, your real name, or birthday as identifiers.
Have your mail delivered to a locked box.
Buy a crosscut shredder and destroy all paper or CDs with your information on it, including unsolicited pre-approved credit offers and blank courtesy checks.
Get a regular copy of your credit report and review its activity.
Don't preprint your Social Security number, driver's license number or even your phone number on your checks.
Restrict online purchases to sites that use encryption.
Report any lost or stolen checks or cards to the appropriate institution within 48 hours to obtain maximum protection.
In addition, progressive employers are taking action on behalf of their employees. According to local expert Teri Rose of Prepaid Legal Services in Neenah, many employers are offering identity theft coverage as a voluntary employee benefit.
Whatever you do, perhaps the single most important aspect of identity theft prevention is an awareness of this issue combined with a program of healthy vigilance to protect your personal data and help minimize your risk.
Larry Sobal is chief executive officer of Appleton Cardiology Associates, a member of the Appleton Heart Institute.

Criminal ID Theft - just one of 5 types
But, Officer, that isn't ME
It's bad enough when someone uses your credit cards to go on a spending spree. But a criminal identity thief could rob you of your good name and put you at risk for arrest.
Get the October 2005 issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance. http://www.kiplinger.com/personalfinance/magazine/index.html
Karl Koessel Never imagined that losing his wallet would land him in Jail.
Allison Curry, a 4th-grade teacher in San Diego, discovered that someone she voluntarily mentored in a foster-care facility had stolen her identity and that she, Allison, was wanted for the crime of prostitution.
In both of these cases, the victims had to prove their innocence and it took hours and it cost dollars to do so.
There are 5 types of ID Theft and financial ID Theft is only one of them. Criminal ID Theft is another - check back for more on this.
